Visiting Artist Colloquium with Fleeta Chew Siegel

“Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Art of Improvisation: From Planned Opportunities to Continual Uncertainty”
Referencing Dr. Sheron Wray’s work on improvisation and the collaborative planning process, this talk will address how we plan for the “impossible,” especially in relation to performances that are calibrated and referenced by participant responses. Chew Siegel will introduce his own interdisciplinary and intercultural practices and how it prepares him for “uncertainty.”
This presentation will examine the strategies that have been developed, and the documentation that enables future uncertainties to be handled more effectively. This document will hopefully become an Atlas – a “living document” – that others can use to “navigate through seas of uncertainty,” a compass, a way finder, and a reference archive.
The Art Department Visiting Artists Colloquium is a series supported by the Anonymous Fund and the Brittingham Trust. The Brittingham Foundation provided additional support for Fleeta Chew Siegel’s visit. VAC lectures are held every Wednesday during the academic year, and are free and open to the public.
